21st Century Business Women

Tuesday, September 4th, 2007

When the first generation of women entered the workforce in earnest in the 1970s, they succeeded in the only way they could by imitating men. Authoritarian leadership and tight control was the hallmark of that days businessman, and women were not exactly welcomed into the ranks of management. Well ladies, that was yesterday, and today is today!

Forget what your mama or your boss told you, because following the rules can be bad for your career. Todays CEO/entrepreneur can no longer tap his/her companies full potential using a command-and-control style. The 21st century business woman needs to be able to build a vision based on the awareness of economic transformation, then help her partners and staff fulfill that vision. She must draw on a wide range of skills to get to the top and stay there. Following are 7 Key Characteristics that are essential:

1. Sell the Vision: A leader with a fresh, independent plan for her companies growth and future has a distinct advantage in luring and keeping great talent and investors. Vision is not some lofty ideal, but an obtainable concept that is easy to understand and will make the company grow to another level.

2. Reinvent the Rules: While women have traditionally been socialized to please others, the 21st century leader knows that good girls rarely post great returns. The strong managers/owners today not only anticipate change, they create entirely new organizations that respond to shifts and search for innovation.

3. Achieve With A Laser Focus: Go where others fear to tread! Being aggressive and ambitious has long been considered male traits, but they are key qualities for new leaders. Todays business woman has the ability to home in on opportunities that others may simply not see, and then excel in that uncharted territory.

4. Use High-Touch in a High-Tech Era: When a number of leaders are conducting business by e-mail, voice mail, passwords, and PINs, the female entrepreneur succeeds because she guides with a strong, personal, bed-side manner. Todays business woman is just as technologically savvy as her peers, but her skill with staff and customers is high-touch which gives her a critical edge and separation from the pack.

5. Challenge or Opportunity? Women are great at turning a challenge into an opportunity instead of using the slash-and-burn approach. They are able to make bold strokes, but they also win the cooperation of others in the organization in making any transformation a success.

6. A Customer Preference Obsession: In this information age which makes it easier to shop around for the best whatever, businesses must work harder to give people what they want before their competitors do. There is no substitute for spending time with clients to become expert at their businesses and learn their demands. Female leaders are almost intuitively adept in doing just that, and without the client even suspecting.

7. Courage Under Fire: Show me any career woman or female entrepreneur today that isn’t able to stand-the-heat in any tough-call situation. Their decision-making skills are rooted in a high level of confidence, because they’ve had to weather and surpass any and all corporate storms they’ve encountered over time.

It takes a certain mindset and bravado for anyone to start their own business and succeed, but its even more difficult for a female entrepreneur. Lets face it, ladies! We’ve always had to be twice-as-smart and twice-as-confident as any male counterpart in the corporate world. After all, if we can bear and raise the future generation, how can running a successful business scare us?

Make a Woman Fall In Love With You

Tuesday, September 4th, 2007

You’ve been out with a woman a couple of times, and you’re crazy about her. You want her to be crazy about you, too. Here’s the plan:

Invite her to your place for dinner. Casually explain to her, though, that you have to get up early the next morning. (It works best if you actually do have to get up early. If you don’t, arrange to go to the gym before work. It’s best not to lie.)

Cook for her. You’ve heard it said that the quickest way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. Well, I’ve got news. It works for women, too, and I mean big time. If she likes you, or even if she’s teetering on the fence about it, you very may well seal the deal by feeding her. It makes her feel cared for, and the contrast of watching a manly man like you perform such a nurturing act is devastatingly sexy. Roll up your sleeves just a bit. Let her admire your forearms as you wield a heavy skillet.

If you’re not accustomed to preparing more than Hot Pockets, head over to foodnetwork.com beforehand for a couple of easy recipes that are sure to please her. Try the dish ahead of time, so that you know you can bring it off. Don’t worry, though, if you mess up on the big night. She’ll be delighted that you tried.

Whatever you do, do not allow her to take over. Put a drink in her hand and tell her that her job is to relax. A great girl will appreciate that. You will utterly and completely impress her. A potential pain in the neck will tell you everything you’re doing wrong and will tell you to sit down, so she can do things properly. This may seem like a good idea at the time, but trust me, this type of woman will tell you what you’re doing wrong for the rest of your life.

If worse comes to worst, and you render dinner inedible, laugh it off and order take-out. A great girl will laugh with along you.

Kiss her goodnight. But do not sleep with her. As tempting as this might be for both of you, you will score big points if you don’t. Instead, take the woman gently into your arms. Kiss her meaningfully and soulfully. Remind her of your early appointment the next day and say you’re sorry you can’t spend more time together. Tell her you’ll call her but do not say when. Walk her to her car.

Here’s what will happen: She’ll spend most of the next day wondering why you didn’t leap on her as other men would have in your position. She’ll know, however, that you’re not gay because of the way you kissed her (a scene she’s likely to replay in her mind all day long, incidentally). She will wonder if you’ll call–and when.

Because you’re a guy who’s good to his word, you will call, just not right away (even if it kills you). The goal here is not to play games but to give her time to mentally savor the events of the previous evening. Give her time to build you up in her own mind. Whatever you do, do not send flowers. Don’t email her. Let things lie.

Call her a day or two later. It’s more than likely that she’ll be absolutely over the moon to hear from you.

I’m sure you can take it from there.

Skin Care for Women

Tuesday, September 4th, 2007

Beautiful skin often begins inside and radiates outward. All skin care is not created equally. Beautiful skin often begins inside and radiates outward. Women’s skin care differs from that of children and men, and among women, skin care even differs at various stages of life. Poor nutrition, unhealthy lifestyle choices and stress all contribute to the overall poor health of the skin. Bad habits such as smoking and consuming high-fat, high-salt diets deprive the body of the important nutrients skin needs. Women have a tendency to retain water, causing skin to look and feel more bloated. To keep water retention under control, it’s important for women to limit the amount of salt in their diets. Extra care should be taken to avoid further skin irritation, cuts or ingrown hairs. Drink at least the recommended eight cups a day and compensate for alcoholic and caffeinated beverages with more water. Exercise is also a good component to skin care.

Regular workouts keep the skin toned and make the feel good. Dry skin can be sunburned much more easily than skin that retains moisture. Moisturizing the skin on a regular basis can help to keep you from getting a sunburn. There are two effective methods to achieve this. Moisturizing towelettes can moisturize the skin, and are convienient and easy to use. Moisturizing the skin, and avoiding long term, repeated exposure to the sun are two of the best ways to protect the skin. A facial cleanser should be used in the morning and at night, especially to wash off cosmetics and a day’s worth of grime. Dry skin tends to do better with non-soapy cleansers since soap can be even more drying. Oily skin often likes soap. Like moisturizers, there are dozens of cleansers to choose from.

Women and Childbirth

Tuesday, September 4th, 2007

In today’s society, women are often looked up to as strong individuals that play an important role in and around their community. They contribute to numerous functions; from household maintenance and house chores to business and career development, as well as their personal interests like reading, exercise, and shopping, just to name a few. In addition to these contributions, women also play an important role in humanity by serving as birth-givers — special people who make possible the continuity of the human race.

By bringing into the world healthy offspring… nurturing them with love and care…they become the centers for ensuring biological health, emotional development, and cultural education which are so necessary to ensure the future of each and every child.

As a woman, feeling good and healthy inside and out is equally necessary for her own health and self-development. With this in mind, it is important to understand and be informed about woman’s health. Men differ from women in a number of ways, especially with regards to health and fitness. Oftentimes, women require more medical attention than men since most female human beings normally give birth at least once in their lifetime. Unlike men, women are more inclined to feel other ailments, and not just during a high-risk pregnancy. During the time of their pregnancy, a woman’s health is so important since any health problem may cause several complications. These complications, in turn, might affect the health of the woman and her baby. Proper attention and medication is a must.

But after pregnancy, the woman should still look out for her health since this is a time for both her and the baby to recuperate from the physical trauma of childbirth — whether it was a normal delivery or via C-Section. Most mothers also want to remove the extra pounds they gained during the pregnancy and regain their good looks and physical fitness. Of course, adding a few extra pounds is considered to be normal when expecting a child. Surely, women are now more open to the use of weight loss pills to avoid looking fat and “ugly” after childbirth. Looking at some celebrities, for example, they can easily influence some women in society to stay slim and sexy even after childbirth. By staying on a strict diet, coupled with lots of exercise and even self help books, women can attain or regain their beauty and health.

But those who find it hard to lose weight may opt to use weight loss pills. After giving birth, it is essential for a woman to regain her health. A woman’s health is significant to her family, herself, and her well-being. A woman should feel good about herself; be happy with her newborn; and go back to her former self with ease and comfort, if possible, without the use of weight loss pills. A woman should not think of what others think of them. Rather, a woman should think of her own good and the good of their newborn child. It is a fact that ideas are based on the expectations and demands of society. But a woman should be true and individualistic if she truly wants to fund liberty and happiness. After giving birth, a woman should consider her baby’s health, her proper diet, and yes, even new shoes for the baby.

Indeed, women and childbirth are inseparable facts of human life that even men should know about and appreciate.

Equal Pay Rights for Women in the UK – Act now before it is too late

Low salary compensation – know your rights to equal pay compensation

It is an unfortunate fact that there is an ever present gap between the salaries paid to men compared to women in the UK. Despite long standing legislation in the form of the Equal Pay Act 1970, many employers and Unions have been slow to embrace the ethos and level the playing field.

In the UK the gulf in wages is thought to be around 18-20% which means that a woman might expect to earn on average 80-82p for every £1 earned by a fellow male worker.

This disparity may be fully justified in some instances however in many cases it is simply a legacy of poor and unequal managerial practices. To illustrate the gap further, over the course of a 30-30 year career a woman might earn up to £100,000 less than a man for doing the same job.

The Equal Pay Act has been law since 1970, however many Unions have been criticised for failing to promote the interests of their members and open negotiations with employers that would lead to a fairer salary system in many workplaces. Progress has been made by some Unions but there is still plenty of ground to make up in many organisations. The key points within the legislation are:

The Act aims to eliminate discrimination between men and women in terms of their pay and contracts of employment where they are doing: – work that is the same or broadly similar; – work rated as equivalent under a job evaluation study; – work of equal value in terms of the demands made on them under headings such as effort, skill and decision-making

The Equal Pay Act 1970 implies an ‘equality clause’ into a contract of employment. This means that you have the right to be paid the same as a worker of the opposite sex provided the above criteria is in place. You are also entitled to equal terms and conditions with a person of the opposite sex in a comparable job.
